In 2002, under the auspices of the United Nations,a framework known as the Kimberly Process Certification Scheme (KP) was put in place that eventually cut off the ability of these insurgent groups to market their diamonds.

According to NGO Partnership Africa Canada (PAC), "the KP now involves 75 countries and controls the movement of all rough diamonds from mine to market, throughout the world. It's a unique system that goes beyond governments, involving the private sector and civil society organizations in a system that has continued to improve since it came on stream in 2003."

Today, it is estimated that conflict diamonds represent less than 1% of the total diamond supply. In the words of PAC, "The significance of these achievements in the diamond world and in the history of the diamond industry cannot be underestimated. They are worth celebrating. And they are worth protecting."

The ultimate goal of all the participants in the KP is not only the complete elimination of conflict diamonds from the supply chain, but just as importantly, to put mechanisms in place to ensure that communities involved in diamond mining obtain substantial benefit from the resource in order to rebuild and develop their infrastructures. In 2005 the Diamond Development Initiative (DDI) was created for this purpose and is supported by governments, NGO's and the diamond industry.

However, there is a real chance that the publicity will actually make things worse for the people whose lives have been impacted the most. The position of PAC is that KP is working and has helped bring the conflicts to and end. PAC's primary efforts now are focussed on redevelopment, in particular the DDI, which will be fundamental to successful rebuilding and for future of diamond mining communities.

The 603 carat monster was found on August 22 at the Letseng diamond mine in Lesotho, a tiny kingdom in southern Africa. The rough gem was auctioned on October 9 in Belgium for $12.39 million. The purchaser is Safdico (South African Diamond Company) which is the Belgian manufacturing arm of Graff Jewelers, a high-end retailer specializing in important diamonds and jewelry. It is estimated that the rough diamond would be yeild several large faceted diamonds of perfect color, including possibly a large heart shape, and have a finished value of approximately $20 million.

The cut features the design of a star - the symbol of the brand - created by the crown and pavilion facets of the stone. Developed more than 4 years ago, and cut in Israel, the Stern Star has what the company refers to as blended shape. A launch party for the exclusive diamond (benefitting YouthAIDS) was held at the H.Stern Fifth Avenue Store in October 2006 with Ashley Judd. The jeweler has more than 165 stores in 12 countries, and also works with independent luxury jewelers and specialty stores including Neiman Marcus and Saks Fifth Avenue.

Liz (Burnett) Kuhns described a square brilliant cut (28 facets) by Dr Duncan Miller (whose studio is in Capetown, South Africa). The angle of this cut is based on the refractive index of a stone and the higher the refractive index, the more beautiful the cut. Miller explained, “The cut is characterized by triangular facets arranged in pairs of fans, with their focal points offset by 90 degrees on the crown and the base of a square stone.” The Southern Cross Cut is a registered design. Whereas the design originated in the southern hemisphere (and the crossing over of facets creates a perfect cross in the center of the stone), the name was decided upon to also signify a famous star constellation - used for navigation - that is called the southern cross.

Debra Savage is known for “diamond pave” in her vintage inspired jewelry designs. Her boutique, 1700 Ocean, is described as a unique diamond shopping experience – a place to shop at the beach; and has become a branded shopping destination (online and off). As the website notes, “In other words we will not, or cannot support anyone or company who takes advantage ecologically, economically, or inhumanely to bring their products to market.”

Three new cuts of diamonds have been created and patented. They gather and reflect light in a very exciting way thus departing from the sheer uniformity and commonness of the old style of cuts. These cuts are known collectively as “Cool Cuts” and individually as Shiva, Heera and Amity. The Shiva cut (89 facets), representing purity and creativity, is said to embody those qualities personified by the ancient Indian God Shiva. A wide range of celebrities have been invited to design a series of limited edition jewelry using this cut. The National Osteoporosis Society is set to benefit from the sale of 3 new cuts of diamond thanks to the generosity of the London based diamond merchant Emdico and society jeweler Blondel Cluff. The team produced the new cuts, pledging a percentage of the wholesale and retail proceeds of the gems to the NOS. Bruce Oldfield, one of Britain’s leading couturiers, has made his first foray into the world of gems with the Bow Ring using the Shiva diamond, inspired by the flowing lines of his 2003 collection. Bruce is an avid supporter of many charities and is pleased to support the NOS in this novel way. A fabulous diamond necklace featuring the Shiva cut was also donated to the NOS.
