Princess Cut Diamonds

Princess cut diamonds represent perhaps the best value of all the diamond shapes. Because the actual shape of a princess cut mirrors the shape (octohedron) of mined diamond crystals, the cutter is able to extract maximum yield from the rough by cutting a princess cut rather than another shape.

If the cutter can get a 1.00ct stone from a given piece of rough by making a princess cut but only a 0.90ct stone in a round, you can see that princess cut will cost less per carat to produce if all other things are equal. And because princess cut diamonds have been so popular for the past several years, a cutter does not lose liquidity by choosing to make a princess cut.

Until recently there have been no generally accepted standards for cut grading princess cuts. That changed when AGS recently began issuing cut grades on princess cuts in the same way they have been grading rounds for the past several years. GIA has just this year started cut grading rounds, and plans to do the same with princess cuts very soon.

The princess cut combines a brilliant cutting style with rectangular outline that works well in modern geometric designs. A certified princess cut diamond is an excellent choice for a value conscious buyer looking to create a fashion-forward piece of fine diamond jewelry.
